Dark Spots Begone

Posted by with Comments Off

darkspotsWhy does the desert sun in Las Vegas cause dark spots, and what are dark spot correctors?

Dark spots can result from hormonal changes, pregnancy, acne and other inflammatory changes. Exposure to the sun without protection is one of the leading causes of dark spots. Whatever the reason, dark spots occur when cells secrete the amino acid tyrosine, which aids in the production of melanin, causing hyper-pigmentation to take place. Dark spot correctors work to diffuse the excess production of melanin. Hydroquinone is one type of melanin suppressant that many products contain. While the FDA has approved hydroquinone for use in topical applications, it concedes  that it “cannot rule out” that it has carcinogenic properties. The European Union has banned it’s use in cosmetics due to safety toxicity concerns.  Something to consider as you look for a skin lightener.  Other popular skin lightening agents include Vitamin C, Kojic Acid, Licorice, Bearberry and Mulberry.

Most dark spot correctors mix an exfoliating ingredient in, such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid to help the skin to turn over at a faster rate. Many products now contain exotic ingredients, and sometimes mix antioxidants with melanin suppressants. There are many products out there, and you may have to try more that one to find what works for you.  Be sure to read over the ingredients carefully so you know what you are putting on your skin. One thing to remember though, time in the sun will ensure that dark spots will recur.
