Fragrance Free Zone

Posted by with No Comments

Privy Skin Care is now a “fragrance free zone,” and a safe place for people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities.

Most people are aware that air pollution, such as second hand smoke, chemical fumes,  and car exhaust fumes are not good for us. However, most do not even think twice about the impact of household cleaning products, perfumed soaps, scented candles, or even air fresheners. Seemingly harmless fragrances in our favorite soap, deodorant, lotion, powder, candles, air freshener and laundry products can cause adverse physical reactions for many people.

People who suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitive (MCS) can have severe reactions to very low levels of fragrance. In addition, many asthmatics are affected by fragrance, as well as young children, people with eczema, and even patients  undergoing chemotherapy. Synthetic fragrances are in just about everything.  Many products list “fragrance” on the label, but very few name the specific ingredients that make up a fragrance. It may help sell products from face cream to laundry detergent, but do you know what’s in it? Federal law doesn’t require companies to list on product labels any of the chemicals in their fragrance mixture. Recent research from EWG and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found an average of 14 chemicals in 17 name brand fragrance products, none of them listed on the label. Fragrances can contain hormone disruptors and are among the top 5 allergens in the world, responsible for allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system.

Air fresheners contain phthalates and many other hazardous chemicals such as benzene, formaldehyde, propellants, solvents, benzenes, and synthetic musks, among others. These chemicals can be easily inhaled, land on the skin and be absorbed, or accidentally ingested. Commercial laundry detergents may impact not only your health but the environment as well. There are many ingredients that are harmful first to your body and are then are passed on into the atmosphere through water waste and dryer emission.

To someone with a sensitivity to these ubiquitous hazards, there are very few safe places.  We are one of them.  Please be mindful as you purchase and use products in your daily life, use fragrance free (often labeled as “free and clear”) items as often as you can.  Ask us for advice on choosing fragrance free skin and hair care products.
