Bioavailability

One big factor in whether a skin care product will work for you is whether enough of it can actually get to where it needs to go in your skin. This is called bioavailability.  Does the product you are using have the right amount of active ingredient? If the dosage is too small, it cannot work properly. If the dosage is too high, you are more likely to see side effects.

Residue Interference

Another problem can be interference that prevents the product from absorbing properly. Residue from cleansers, makeup, and sunscreen can all form a barrier on your skin’s surface, affecting the absorption of subsequent products. The biggest culprits are cleansing creams and scrubs, which generally leave some type of residue, such as cetyl alcohol or cetearyl alcohol. Clear foaming cleansers tend to be the “cleanest”. Makeup and sunscreen can settle into pores and skin imperfectons, but will usually come off with a good cleansing regimen. Regular facials can also help ensure that your skin is free and clear of residue and blockages.
