Acne can be particularly frustrating for adults, often presenting challenges that can seem insurmountable. A treatment that may have been effective during your teenage years might now be ineffective or, worse, could exacerbate your acne. Many adults experience breakouts well into their 30s, 40s, and even 50s, and some may even develop acne for the very first time in adulthood.
The two primary culprits behind adult acne are genetic predisposition and hormonal fluctuations. Additionally, inflammation and the presence of naturally occurring bacteria can intensify acne conditions. Inflammation triggers a cascade of reactions characterized by redness, swelling, and irritation, leading to damage to the walls of the hair follicles. As a result, debris and bacteria infiltrate the dermis. White blood cells rush to the site to eliminate the debris, releasing enzymes that further disrupt the follicle lining and incite additional inflammation, swelling, and discomfort. These enzymes can also degrade collagen, increasing the likelihood of post-acne scarring.
Acne lesions can be classified into two categories: inflammatory and non-inflammatory. Among the inflammatory lesions, the most common types are papules and pustules. Non-inflammatory lesions consist of open or closed comedones that are not red or swollen; open comedones are popularly known as blackheads, while closed comedones are referred to as whiteheads.
More severe forms of acne include nodules and cysts. A nodule is a deeper lesion resembling a papule but located deeper within the dermis, sometimes reaching the subcutaneous level. Nodules typically arise when there is a deep rupture in the follicle wall, often involving multiple follicles and resulting in extensive pockets of infection. Conversely, a cyst is a nodule with an epithelial lining that harbors significant inflammation, leading to the formation of a boil-like lesion that ultimately ruptures. Scarring is commonly associated with cystic acne.
So, what can a licensed esthetician do to combat adult acne? While there is no remedy for the genetic factors contributing to acne, even the most severe cases can be managed effectively to achieve extended periods without visible lesions. Although clients may still experience the occasional breakout, a comprehensive home-care regimen combined with a strategic plan from a qualified skin care professional can significantly lower the chances of acne reappearing.
In addition to providing customized skin treatments during your visits, we can assist you in assessing your home care routine and surroundings for issues that may lead to or worsen skin concerns. For instance, excessive cleansing or exfoliating can irritate acne-prone skin, potentially resulting in inflammation that fuels more flare-ups. Environmental factors and diet also play crucial roles in both the development and resolution of acne lesions.
