The skin is the largest organ of the body; caring for it will serve you well. And no matter what your age, having healthy skin is important to your appearance and your overall well-being: it not only feels good, it looks good. Pay attention to your skin, and for added benefit follow these five tips for softer looking skin.

Know how to wash your face. Regular bar soap is a great cleaner for dirty hands, but can be too harsh for the skin on your face. Dermatologists agree that using a cleanser formulated especially for the face is a better option. Beware of any cleanser containing sodium lauryl sulphate, a deep cleaner that is also dehydrating. Always pat your skin dry; no rubbing.

Exfoliation –removing the outermost layer of skin to reveal new skin underneath—is an essential step in the process of caring for your skin.

Dermatologists recommend that you exfoliate once a week to remove dead skin cells, dirt, & oil. You can exfoliate with exfoliating shower gloves or a muff, or with products designed for exfoliation. You can also find recipes to make your own scrub using baking soda, sugar or oatmeal.

Stay Hydrated. Our bodies are about 60% water; proper hydration is essential for preserving good skin. Eight 8-ounce glasses per day will meet the requirements.

Eat a healthy diet. Many people take fish oil capsules, but it’s preferable to get essential omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. Salmon, tilapia, and herring are rich in omega 3, which studies have shown can help lower triglycerides and blood pressure, in addition to softening your skin.

Avoiding high fat foods and processed foods (which often can be one and the same) will prevent your skin from becoming dry and dull. A diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables is packed with vitamins and will also help to keep skin soft and supple. Vitamins A and C are particularly helpful for smoother skin.

Professional cosmetic treatment might be a good idea for you if you want to go a little “deeper”. Privy Skin Care offers microdermabrasion for the body, body peels and a number of hydrating facials. Try the Ultimate Hydration or Vitamin C Renewal facial to feed and nourish the skin, leaving it smooth and silky.
