It is amazing how pervasive some of these skin care myths are, despite all evidence to the contrary.  Read, learn, and go forth and spread the truth:

Myth: Vigorous washing will clear up bad skin.  No no no! Too much/too vigorous washing will dry out and irritate your skin, leading to more problems.  Try to only clean your face twice daily with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser (or oil), and gently pat dry with a clean towel.

Myth: Use the highest SPF sunscreen available. Choose a product with an SPF of between 15 and 30, but most importantly, choose a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects you against both UVA and UVB rays. A sunscreen with an SPF of 80 that does not provide protection against UVA rays is cheating you, and leaving you at greater risk for skin cancer.

Myth: Eating junk food causes acne. No direct link has been found between “junk” food and acne.  Stress, however, can absolutely cause your skin to break out (and we often eat poorly when stressed, so perhaps that is why this myth persists). Other causes of acne include hormones, bacteria, and environmental pollution. Stay away from the junk food for your overall health, but look for other causes for your acne.

Myth: “All Natural” always means “better”.  While we promote a largely “natural” approach to health and skincare, we know that it is not a route to cure all evils. Some synthetic (man made) products serve useful purposes and are not harmful to us, and some natural products should not be used on your skin and can be harmful. Truly natural products contain no preservatives against bacterial and microbial growth, which means they are highly susceptible to contamination and have a very short shelf life.  Navigating ingredient labels and conflicting advice can be overwhelming, and at Privy Skin Care we will always take the time to help you choose products that are both beneficial to you, and that fit your desired level of “natural”.
