Microbeads! A wonder of modern science! They gently exfoliate your skin and cleanse your pores, delicately scrubbing away years of sun damage and imperfections. After rinsing them off, you step into your day with a radiant, youthful glow. However, what many don’t realize is that when these tiny plastic particles are washed down the drain, they pose a significant threat to the health of our planet.

Extensive research indicates that these minuscule plastic beads, commonly found in cosmetics, skincare products, and even toothpaste, are infiltrating lakes and oceans worldwide, with particularly high concentrations detected in the Great Lakes. According to the International Campaign Against Microbeads in Cosmetics, “wastewater treatment plants are not equipped to filter out microbeads, which is a primary reason they contribute to the Plastic Soup swirling in our oceans.” Marine life ingests or absorbs these microbeads, which then travel up the food chain, ultimately reaching humans at the top. Since microbeads are not biodegradable, once they enter the marine ecosystem, their removal becomes virtually impossible.

Without a doubt, the best course of action is to eliminate these products from your routine. Microbeads lurk in everything from facial cleansers and body scrubs to toothpaste. Avoid purchasing items that list polyethylene microbeads as an ingredient. Opt instead for products featuring natural exfoliants such as finely ground apricot shells, coconut husks, or cocoa beans. Alternatively, consider crafting your own exfoliator at home; there are numerous DIY recipes using common household items like salt, sugar, and baking powder.
