exfoliation

It may not sound glamorous, but exfoliation, or removing dead epidermal cells (the outer layers of the skin) benefits your skin in many ways. Skin texture is smoother and softer, follicle openings are cleaner, deep pore extractions are easier, cell turnover rate is increased, product penetration is improved, and blood flow and circulation are stimulated. Meaning: you will look and feel better!

mechanical

There are two types of exfoliation: mechanical and chemical. Mechanical exfoliation is a physical method of rubbing the dead cells off of the skin. For example, utilizing abrasives, such as sugar scrubs.  Another form of mechanical exfoliation is microdermabrasion, which is a deeper form of exfoliation done by your esthetician. Micrcodermabrasion uses a vacuum mechanism.  It stimulates cell metabolism while removing dead epidermal cells. Microdermabrasion can be used for sun damage, pigmentation, open and closed comedones, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores and coarsely textured skin.

chemical

Another method is chemical exfoliation. In chemical exfoliation dead skin cells and intracellular connections are dissolved by chemical agents. Chemical agents consist of AHA’s, BHA’s, TCA, and enzymes. Depending on the product that is used and the training and experience of the skin care specialist depends on the depth of exfoliation. The ph of the skin is 5.5. In order for a chemical to work the ph must drop below 5.5 which will cause an inflammatory response.

Microdermabrasion exfoliates the epidermis more effectively than a 30% chemical peel, however the chemical peel does have some additional benefits. Those who can not tolerate chemical exfoliation may be a good candidate for microdermabrasion. A skin consultation is done before microdermabrasion or chemical exfoliation. At Privy Skin Care we offer Crystal Free Microdermabrasion, and an extensive array of chemical/enzyme treatments by Rhonda Allison. Schedule your appointment online, or call for more information!
