Las Vegas may still be basking in warm, balmy temperatures, but the arrival of fall is imminent. After enduring the intense desert heat, your skin deserves some extra TLC to combat the dry skin often brought on by our windy, arid climate. The secret to effectively treating dry skin lies in preventing moisture loss through a thoughtful skincare routine.

While the recommendation to drink 8-10 glasses of water daily is beneficial for a multitude of reasons, it shouldn’t be viewed as a singular solution for dehydrated skin. Beyond proper hydration, incorporating a healthy dose of Omega-3 fatty acids into your diet can enhance skin hydration and help maintain its suppleness.

Exfoliation is a crucial step that is frequently overlooked when addressing dry skin. By exfoliating properly, you can eliminate dead skin cells, thereby promoting cellular turnover and revitalizing the outermost layer of the epidermis to expose healthier skin beneath. This can be done on your entire body (excluding the face) through the technique of dry brushing. For your facial skin, opt for a gentle exfoliating scrub once or twice a week; a simple mixture of baking soda with your facial wash or a scrub made from brown sugar and olive oil can work wonders.

Another common pitfall is over-relying on moisturizer to combat dryness without considering the impact of your facial cleanser. Using a harsh, drying cleanser can lead your skin to compensate by overproducing natural oils (sebum), resulting in a vicious cycle of dryness and oiliness. Instead, choose an oil-based cleanser to help restore balance. Beware of moisturizers that contain alcohol in various forms; while it may serve as a carrier or drying agent, it can exacerbate skin dehydration. Aim for a moisturizer that lists water and a light oil as its primary ingredients to keep your skin nourished.
