Microbeads! A remarkable innovation of modern science! They gently exfoliate your skin and purify your pores, delicately buffing away the years and the sun damage that can dull your complexion. With a simple rinse, they wash away, leaving you with a luminous, youthful glow. But there’s an alarming downside: when these tiny plastic particles are washed down your drain, they pose a serious threat to the health of our planet.

Extensive research indicates that these minuscule plastic beads, commonly found in cosmetics, skincare products, and even toothpaste, ultimately end up contaminating lakes and oceans worldwide, with particularly high concentrations in the Great Lakes. According to the International Campaign Against Microbeads in Cosmetics, “wastewater treatment plants are not equipped to filter out microbeads, which is the primary reason…they contribute to the Plastic Soup swirling in the world’s oceans.” Marine life inadvertently consumes these microbeads, which then permeate the marine food chain. Since humans occupy the apex of this chain, it’s highly likely that we are also ingesting microbeads through the seafood we consume. Alarmingly, microbeads are non-biodegradable, and once they infiltrate the marine ecosystem, they become virtually impossible to eliminate.

It’s clear that steering clear of these products is essential. Microbeads lurk in everything from facial cleansers and body scrubs to toothpaste. Avoid any products that list polyethylene microbeads among their ingredients. Opt for alternatives with natural exfoliators like finely ground apricot shells, coconut bark, or cocoa beans. Alternatively, consider crafting your own exfoliator at home; there are numerous DIY recipes utilizing common household items like salt, sugar, and baking soda.
