Bioavailability And Your Skin Care Products
One big factor in whether a skincare product works for you is its bioavailability – whether enough of it can actually get to where it needs to go in your skin. First, does your product contain the right amount of active ingredient? If the dosage is too small, it can’t work properly. If it’s too high, you’re more likely to see side effects. Ask your qualified esthetician if the product you’re using has the correct concentration of active ingredients for your needs.
Interference can also prevent proper absorption. Residue from cleansers, makeup, and sunscreen can form a barrier on your skin’s surface, impacting how well subsequent products absorb. The biggest culprits are cleansing creams and scrubs, which often leave occlusive residue – like cetyl alcohol or cetearyl alcohol – behind. Clear foaming cleansers tend to be the cleanest. Makeup and sunscreen can settle into pores and imperfections, but a good cleansing regimen usually removes them. Regular facials can also help ensure your skin stays free of residue and blockages.
