Summer is here, pools are open, and vacation plans are made! Before you head outdoors, consider this: The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention reports that more than 3.5 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed and 2.2 million people are treated for it in the U.S. every year.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “When detected early, skin cancer – including melanoma, the deadliest form – is highly treatable. Research shows women are nine times more likely than men to notice melanoma on others, meaning they could help save their partners’ lives by spotting it early. This is especially important for men over 50, who face a higher risk of developing melanoma than the general population.”

Skin cancer remains the most common cancer in the United States. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the leading cause, and tanning booths and sunlamps are just as harmful. Melanoma is the most dangerous type. Here in Las Vegas, the hot desert climate can scorch your skin and cause serious damage in a matter of minutes.

Protect yourself with these simple steps:

  • Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

  • Apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher every two hours – and after swimming or sweating.

  • Cover up with long sleeves and a wide-brimmed hat.

  • Check your skin once a month for changes.

  • Don’t let clouds fool you. UV rays penetrate cloud cover, so wear sunscreen even on overcast days.

Be smart about sun safety: perform a monthly skin self-exam and encourage others to do the same. Skip the tanning bed entirely – indoor tanning before age 35 increases your risk of melanoma by 59%. No tan is worth that risk.
