Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA)
What They Are: Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are a group of water-soluble acids, either derived from natural sources or synthesized in a laboratory. In the cosmetic industry, AHAs are predominantly extracted from various fruits and dairy products. Some of the most commonly used AHAs include glycolic acid, sourced from sugar cane; lactic acid, derived from sour milk; malic acid, found in apples; citric acid from citrus fruits; and tartaric acid, which comes from grape wine.
What They Do: In essence, AHAs serve as powerful exfoliating agents. When used correctly, they offer a multitude of skin benefits, including:
-
Smoother, more refined skin texture
-
Decreased occurrence of clogged pores and breakouts
-
Boosted collagen production for improved skin elasticity
-
A clearer, more uniform complexion
-
Diminished discoloration from sun exposure and aging
-
Reduction in the appearance of acne scars
-
Smoother fine lines and wrinkles
Due to their remarkable effectiveness, exfoliating acids are integral to a wide array of skincare formulations, ranging from cleansers and toners to peels and moisturizers. It’s essential to consult with a licensed esthetician before starting an AHA regimen to fully comprehend their function. Notably, while AHAs are prominently featured in many cleansers, these products are often less effective, as the acids need time to penetrate the skin. Since cleansers are rinsed off shortly after application, they cannot deliver their full benefits. Additionally, it’s crucial to apply sunscreen liberally while using AHA products, as they can increase skin sensitivity to UV rays.
Since their introduction to the skincare market in the 1980s, Alpha Hydroxy Acids have remained a cornerstone of effective skincare solutions. To explore how to best incorporate AHAs into your beauty routine, contact me or schedule an appointment today!
